Can Aesthetics Training Change Your Life? For This Nurse, It Did

how aesthetics training can change your life as a nurse

Life-changing.

That’s an expression you hear a lot, almost always with a hefty dose of hyperbole. If you’re like most people, you’ve probably found yourself enthusing that everything from a gourmet meal to a good back rub to a newly purchased toilet bowl cleaner was, yes, life-changing.

We all know that such declarations are generally just harmless expressions of enthusiasm. But we also know that precious few things can be accurately described as life-changing when it comes down to it. It’s mostly business as usual, especially when it comes to your career. Even when you get a promotion, “life-changing” probably isn’t going to be high on your list of descriptors. So when you hear this expression applied to aesthetics training, it’s easy to chalk it up to just another instance of an overstatement.

But sometimes, aesthetics training really can be life-changing in ways that have nothing to do with hyperbole. At AAAMS (The American Association of Aesthetic Medicine and Surgery), we’ve found that aesthetic training can often change our student’s life in dramatic and unexpected ways, and we think Megan’s story is a particularly illustrative example. While few will face the obstacles that Megan successfully surmounted, her story holds valuable lessons for anyone considering a nursing career pivot

Megan’s Story

Megan worked as a nurse anesthetist for nearly five years. She loved her work and was advancing in her career until she was in a serious car accident that required multiple surgeries and extensive physical therapy. Although she eventually recovered and returned to work, she found herself experiencing a panic attack every time she entered the OR. (After the trauma of so many surgeries, Megan realized she never wanted to set foot in an OR again.)

Megan soon came to terms with a harsh truth: Her nursing career as she’d known it was over. She knew she’d have to find a new way forward in her chosen profession, but she had no idea what field she belonged in or what it would take to make such a dramatic career shift.

For months, Megan agonized over her career path, not feeling confident about which way to turn. But when a friend pointed out that she’d be great in aesthetic medicine—and Megan took a leap of faith and enrolled in an aesthetic course—everything changed.

“Even though I recovered from my accident,” explained Megan, “it really took something away from me: My love for my former nursing career and my confidence that I could make a fresh, successful start. But when I took my first Botox course, it was like this thick fog suddenly lifted, and the sun came out because I realized I had found a field that felt like home!”

Aesthetic medicine helped her rediscover and reclaim her creativity.

“Feeling like I’d found my field in aesthetic medicine was shocking to me because I was so science-focused I had no idea that something was missing for me in my career: my artistic side! Aesthetic medicine teaches you to practice sound science in an essentially creative way—that’s what aesthetics is all about. So it helped me rediscover and reclaim my creativity—something that had gotten buried in early childhood.

As weird as it sounds, Botox training saved my life, both personally and professionally. And now, 10 years down the road, with tons of advanced aesthetic training in my treatment arsenal, I’m happier in my career than I ever thought possible! Every day when I go to work, I get to combine my love for art and science and make my clients beamingly happy in the process. When I enrolled in my first Botox course, I had no idea where it would lead, but there’s no question it was among the best decisions I’ve ever made!”
